Motivation Monday: Getting Stuck in Planning Mode

Hello Lovelies,

Are you a goal setter?

As I have been working on goals for my "Year of Transformation", I've noticed something.

There is an insidious little behavior that tricks us into thinking that we are working on achieving our goals, when in fact, we are really not making progress toward them at all.
It seems to be worthwhile, because it is actually part of how we get started working on our goals, but if we aren't careful, it can take over and lull us into a false sense of accomplishment.




So what is this insidious behavior that is robbing us of our progress?

Planning.

But not just planning...it's a bit more complicated than that.  Rather,  it's what I like to refer to as 

Perpetual Planning.

I'm sure you know what I'm referring to.  Especially if you are a perfectionist like I am.  Perpetual planning is when we continuously find another way to prepare for our goal rather than making any measurable progress in the direction of actually achieving anything.


Let me give you a little example from my personal life.  As part of my goals this year, I have been looking to breathe new life into my blog.  If you have been reading my blog over the past few months, you may have noticed a marked movement away from Interior Design and DIY and more toward Fashion and Lifestyle.

I have talked about switching things up with the blog many times over the past couple of years, but I finally started to do so recently.  You might think that this is progress.  And it is....to a degree.  But here's where the over-planning comes in.

As part of my blog revamp,  I have decided that I want to offer some online courses.  An in order to do so, it is a good idea to build up my email list.  So, I finally signed up with an email service.  And you may have noticed that I've added a pop-up email opt-in.  But that's as far as I've gone.

Why?

Planning.  I've been doing every bit of research I can on email lists and online courses.  I've taken  courses myself on these things.  I've read and I've written plans, and I've even set timelines.  Here's the thing.  None of these items are inherently bad.  In fact, they're necessary to get things moving efficiently.

So what's the problem then, Wendy?

The problem is, that I'm using these things as an excuse. If I'm taking courses, and signing up for services, and planning and making timelines, then I'm obviously making progress toward my goal.  Unless, I'm not actually getting started on the goal.  Unless, I'm considering these preliminary steps to be good enough and using them to mask the fear I have in moving forward.

And isn't that what it ultimately boils down to?  Fear?

Fear can keep us from achieving so much in this life.  And the truth is that most of the successful people in this world are afraid.  They have just learned to push through the fear and work toward their goals anyway.

Getting started is usually the scariest part of any goal.  Once you are in the middle of it, it is rarely as scary as you thought it would be.

So let's get started.  If you have any goals that you are procrastinating by staying in
perpetual Planning Mode, it's time to push through and really get started.

I'm talking to myself here too.  So, let's do it together.  Let's push through the fear, pull ourselves out of planning mode, and MAKE THOSE GOALS HAPPEN!
