A Few Fun and Easy Pumpkin Projects~

The past couple of days have been cool and rainy and it has put me in an Autumn mood!

So today I thought it would be fun to share a few easy-peasy pumpkin projects that are sure to bring that Fall feeling into your home.

First, a couple of years ago I shared a pretty Autumn tablescape idea that featured glittered pumpkins. They were adorable!  And they couldn't be any easier to make.  If you want to make some for your own fall decor, you can follow my instructions on how to make them here.

My New House: A Rug for the Dining Room~

This post is sponsored by DownEast Home.

Hello Lovelies!

So glad you could join me today.  I have a little update to share with you...

Things are coming together slowly but surely here in The Hydeaway Cottage.  Although I'd love to do an entire room reveal, I have what I like to refer to as decorating ADD.   I get going on one room, get it almost done and then I get distracted by another room.  Anyone else out there have this condition??  Lol!

But I do have what I consider to be a rather exciting addition to the dining room that I can share with you today.   I found the perfect rug!!  And honestly, that's quite a feat.

Isn't she pretty?  The color scheme I've been working with is charcoal, linen, brown, white and light gray.  I can't believe the good luck I had in finding a rug that incorporated all of the colors!  And was exactly the patchwork style that I had been craving.  I mean, what are the odds??

Perfect For Autumn: Stacked Wood in Decor~

Today I wanted to share some inspiration photos I've been collecting on Pinterest of different ways to display stacked wood in decor.

I favor a neutral palette in my home.  And one of the key ways to make a neutral palette interesting is to introduce texture.  A lot of texture.

I've been enamored with the look of stacked firewood in houses and have longed to incorporate the look in my own home.  Problem is I don't have a fireplace.

Beauty~

Yesterday, I spent the entire day with the team of designers from Ivory Homes where I work.  We drove from one Ivory community to another and spent time going through the model homes and some of the quick move-ins.

It was so much fun!  The reason I love being a designer so much is that I am completely obsessed with houses.  So spending an entire day looking through them was more play than it was work.

Picture this for me, if you will.  Ten interior designers in a model home.  Loving every inch of it. And then we get in a joking discussion about how, if we actually lived in the home, we'd ask visitors not to touch anything and to stand in one spot in the great room where none of the beautiful surroundings could possibly be disturbed.  The discussion was, of course, all in jest.  But it made me think about my own little home.

I love to surround myself with beautiful things.  I certainly don't have the same kind of budget allotted to decorating a model home, so my own furnishings and decor are not as fancy...but that doesn't make them any less lovely in their own way.  And the crowing touch is the family and friends that fill the space...and they are what ultimately add the most beauty to any space.

As my friend the Nester says "It Doesn't Have to be Perfect to be Beautiful."  How true it is.

My Istagram post from yesterday kind of sums it up for me..

"Each morning as I drive my oldest to school, we pass this lovely pasture full of sheep and cows.  I am always captivated by this tree which (although it's hard to tell in this iPhone photo) has a broken trunk.  Somehow it has survived and is all that much more beautiful because of its brokenness.  I can only hope that my survival and brokenness have the same effect on me."

If you don't already follow me on Instagram, I'd love it if you did...don't let this blurry photo make you hesitate - I couldn't size it without losing clarity - Lol!

Have a great day~

My New House: Learning My Limitations~

This isn't easy for me to admit:  I can't do everything.

Seems obvious.  Shouldn't come as a shock.  But it's still hard for  me to admit.  I have always been a "Type A Overachiever".  And when I say that, I'm not exaggerating.  Not one little bit.  In school, I was a straight A student.  I had about 1 gazillion extra curricular activities (give or take a few).

So here I am.  Years later.  A single mom with my own home.  Wait...let me clarify that....an INTERIOR-DESIGNER-single-mom with my own home.  That means, of course, that I have grand plans for just about every nook and cranny of this house.

Here's where I've had to learn that I can't do everything.  In the past, I would have just made a "to-do" list and started tackling it one item at a time.  Now, I work full time as a designer, part-time as a design blogger and 24-hour-a-day-time as a mom.  That leaves little time for projects.

So I did the unthinkable (unthinkable to a type-A, DIY, Design blogger anyway).  I hired a project done.  And I know it won't be the only project that gets accomplished this way.  And you know what? That's okay.

Here's a sneak peek of said project...

And I couldn't be happier.  And neither could my boys.  I took on the painting of said project to save a bit of money...and now I realize that even fitting in painting is challenging with my current schedule. I've been working on it for 5 days now, and I'm not done.  Meanwhile, the boys are camping out in the living room.  An arrangement that they think is fun.  But one that I'm ready to have over with.

Every new phase of life teaches us something about ourselves.  In this phase, I've learned that I can do ANYTHING I put my mind to, I just can't do EVERYTHING.  There is quite a distinction.  And in learning that about myself, I've freed up some of the guilt.  It's okay (even as a type-A, DIY, Design Blogging Interior Designer) to ask for help when you need it.  And that, my friends, is growth. Learning my limitations has actually expanded my abilities in a way.  Who woulda thought?

xoxo
Wendy

Frugal Friday~

Oh my word, you guys!

I'm so embarrassed!!  I was thrown off by the holiday weekend, and literally didn't know I had forgotten to post Frugal Friday until I was driving my son to school this morning and realized it's Friday morning!  I'm so sorry!  But better late than never....here's Frugal Friday (only 12 hours later. sigh.)

For this week's Frugal Round-up, I thought it would be fun to share a bit of fall inspiration.

First up, this very unique Hydrangea and Antler wreath shared by Little Farmstead.  Definitely has that Autumn vibe!

My New House: Changing Can Lights to Pendants~

Today I'm teaming up with Shades of Light to make a big change in my kitchen!

I'm so excited to share this change I made to the kitchen of the Hydeaway Cottage! It makes a HUGE difference and wasn't hard at all.

Here's my kitchen the way it looked before I moved in...

The great thing about adding pendant lights where you already have can lights (and I just happened to have two positioned perfectly above the kitchen island)  is that you can buy converter kits at your local Home Depot (or Lowe's or other big box home improvement store).

My New House: Inspiration For My Entry Door~

I've been enamored with the idea of painting the inside of my front door a different color to set off my entry. And although I've been debating a number of different colors, I'm really loving the idea of black.  I realize it's not a new idea, but the look is classic and will make my tiny entry a bit more dramatic.

I've been searching Houzz for inspirational photos, and today I'm going to share a few of my faves.
