Frugal Friday~

Hello, my dear readers. I was very glad to find out yesterday, that I am not the only one who suffers from Design ADD!! Your comments had me cracking up! If you don't know what I'm talking about, click here to find out if you too suffer from Design ADD ( apparently it is a very common ailment around these parts.)

Now on to the subject at hand...welcome to this week's edition of Frugal Friday! Today I wanted to share with you my console makeover. If you caught my Blog Parade of Homes post earlier this week, you saw the photos of our in-progress living room. (If you didn't get to see this post click here.) I mentioned that I was going to revive the console with a coat of paint...but I wasn't sure on a color. I was debating between a dark taupe and an olive green. Well, the taupe won. It's a color found in the room's area rug, and I thought it made a nice sophisticated but neutral addition to the room's palette.

So without further ado (is that how you spell it?) here is the console before...

And here is the after...

I ADORE IT!!! The color is Better Homes and Garden's Mink Brown. It really perked up the old console. I never could bring myself to like the console's wood. (But it was a freebie, so what's a Frugal OCD - obsessively consumed with decorating- girl to do?) It was too "rustic" for me, and not in a good way. Now it looks classic and sophisticated and even the funny hardware looks nice. It was a good call! (Now I'm on the lookout for a coffee table to paint the same color.)

mmmmmmmmmmmm. Much better.

Design ADD~

I've finally put a name to my condition.
Design ADD.
And what exactly is Design ADD, you might ask? Well let me tell you a little bit about it...because if you are reading my blog, you may just suffer from it as well.

Ask yourself the following questions...

1. Do you enjoy a cottage style room as much as a contemporary space?

Image from Veranda

2. Do you enjoy reading Country Living and House Beautiful or Elle Decor equally well?

3. Do you love the thrill of the hunt regardless of whether you're thrifting, junking, shopping online or going to a design showroom?

4. One day do you want an all white room while the next day finds you in love with color, color and more color?

5. Could you redesign your spaces often?

6. Are you constantly tweaking your rooms?

If you've answered yes to 1 or more of these questions, you too may suffer from Design ADD.

My style is constantly evolving. A fact that is true for most people, I'm sure. But as I have perused my favorite decor magazines, books and blogs lately, I've found that I really love some very disparate styles. My house tends more toward a cottage look, although I've lately been incorporating some more contemporary elements. I like to call it Urban Farmhouse, but maybe Contemporary Cottage might be a better fit.

All I know is, I love Interior Design. It fascinates me. And if I have to live with Design ADD as a result, then I guess I will.

How about you? Do you have Design ADD?
Frugal Friday goes up tonight at Midnight. Can't wait to see what y'all have up your sleeve this week!

Linky Love~

Since last week's Frugal Friday fell just after Earth Day...I thought it would be fun to share a few of the fabulous earth-friendly posts with you. Reduce...Reuse...Recycle...

First up, Stephanie Lynn at Under the Table Dreaming shared a fun wreath made from recycled plastic bags. It reminds me of the feather wreaths that have been so popular recently...and at a fraction of the cost!!!

Molly at A Bit O' Shine shared a plethora of earth friendly tutorials. Check them out here.

I just loved the girly desk featured by Creations from my Heart. Hard to believe the original desk was a curbside find. Talk about upcycling!

Uh-huh...lovin' this dreamy table from Self Confessed Lamp Tramp. Made from a planter? Divine!

Pretty recycled craft storage from Remodaloholic. Love. it.

The parlor chair planter from Lemon Tree Creations is just about the cutest thing ever! Why can't I find vintage ice cream parlor chairs on the side of the road?

And finally, Notions on Nesting shared a recipe for homemade Laundry Soap...cuts down on package waste, saves you a bundle! Got to love that!

So there you have it! Earth Day-inspired Frugal Goodness!!

Just a note...May sponsorships on the Shabby Nest are still available...email me for details!!

Blog Parade of Homes~

Happy Monday everybody! Today, I'm really excited to be partipating in a Bloggy Parade of Homes sponsored by Poppies at Play!

If you've never been to the Shabby Nest...WELCOME! I'm Wendy...a busy mother of four who loves all things home! I aim to make my spaces beautiful and livable and to create those spaces without breaking the bank. I hope you enjoy this little tour of my home, and if you like what you see, I hope you'll stick around!! I always love to meet new bloggy friends!

For those of you who are regular readers of the Shabby Nest, the first three rooms I'm going to share will probably look quite familiar...but, at the end of the post, I've included a sneak peak at our in-process living room that I hope will pique your interest in what is to come for that room!

Boys' Sock Monkey Bedroom

First up, my boys' sock monkey bedroom. I used my collection of vintage sock monkeys as the inspiration for this room's color scheme, and I just love the result. To read more about the process I used to create this room go here.

The Princess' Vintage Cottage Bedroom

Next up, the Princess' bedroom. For the centerpiece of the Princess' room, I used a beautiful old wrought iron bed that I inherited from my sister-in-law. You can read more about the Princess' room here.

White and Gray Master Bedroom Retreat

Ah, my master bedroom. I can honestly say that this is the first time in my married life that I have LOVED my master bedroom. The gray and white palette, the luxurious bedding, the custom headboard. All of it. It is really a retreat!!

You can read more about it here.

A Sneak Peak at our In-Progress Living Room

And here is the sneak peak of our living room that I promised you! It's starting to really take shape and I'm excited!! I put a fresh white slipcover on the sofa and sewed up some pretty throw pillows in a chocolate brown and cream trellis pattern.

We painted the buffet white (which I l0ve!) but are still looking to switch out the accessories and add a colorful lamp. The console under the large charcoal print (by my father-in-law) is still waiting it's coat of paint. I'm currently debating between a dark taupe - a color found in the area rug - or an olive green...you'll have to stay tuned to see which color wins out. The lamp on the console also needs replacing...

Do I spy painter's dropcloth drapes? Why yes!! They're perfect in the space!!

Here's a view of the opposite side of the room. We're hoping to replace the mismatched chairs and add a coffee table. The large black mirror over the mantel is going to receive a fresh coat of cream colored paint so that it matches the trumeau mirror propped in front of it. I'd also love to paper the back of the back of the built-in bookcase to lighten up the color a bit. Because we are renting, we can't paint out the bookshelves nor can we do anything about the discolored stone on the fireplace or the "lovely" brass fireplace grate, so the best I can do is camouflage them. Exactly how I'm going to do that remains to be seen!

I hope you enjoyed this little tour of my home! To continue on with the Parade of homes, click the #2 below!

Frugal Friday~

For today's Frugal Friday I wanted to sing the praises of Tar-jay. I know, I know, you're saying to yourself, "how is that different than any other day?" And okay, I'm with ya on that one. It's not that much different than any other day. But today I wanted to focus on my love of Target's PB knock offs.

In our move from the NorthEast to the Mountain West, my beloved numbered chairs didn't make it. (Please, let's have a moment of silence in remembrance of my sweet chairs.) So we've been making do using our long bench on one side of the kitchen table, and bar stools on the other. It works fine when it's just our little family, but when we have anyone else over...let's just say it's a bit awkward having guests sitting on bar stools at the table. Sooooo, I've been on the lookout for some chairs for the kitchen table. And I wanted something different than your everyday average dining chairs.

What I REALLY wanted were some tolix chairs. But it is impossible to find those babies for less than about $200 each. And, alas, $800 worth of dining chairs is just NOT in the budget right now. (But you can rest assured, I am going to start a tolix chair fund in the near future.)

In the meantime, I decided that it would be fun to have some contemporary looking one piece chairs. I searched on the www, and found them in all sorts of price ranges. And even in my latest PB teen catalog (yeah, I subscribe to all of the PB catalogs) they had what they called the "swoop" chair on sale for $79.99. It was just what I wanted. And then, I found the same "swoop" chair at Target on sale 2 for $69.99. Yesiree!! (okay, so in the catalog, they had plain colored "swoop" seats, but online all I could find is a picture of the polkadot version.)

They were super easy to put together.

And they look simply fabulous at my kitchen table (and, according to Mr. One...they are much more comfortable than the bench.)

Hooray for Tar-jay and their PB knockoffs.

Now it's your turn.

Alice Lane Home~

A couple of months back, while I was spending an evening blog surfing (I know, shocking isn't it?) I happened upon some photos of a house that simply took my breath away. Well, come to find out, this Gustavian beauty was located right here in good old Utah. So after a little research, I learned that the decorating geniuses behind this amazing house were the lovely ladies at Alice Lane Home.

Images from Alice Lane

And then I starting seeing Alice Lane popping up here and there around blogland...and it piqued my interest. So when the Princess and I made our way down to Provo for our 30 Strangers photo session, I knew I had to visit the Alice Lane Showroom.

Oh. my. decorating. goodness. I had so much fun just soaking it all in. Luckily, the Princess appreciates a well decorated room, so she enjoyed it almost as much as I did.

I fell in love with this three piece mural map of Paris. (And the bed in front of it.)

I also really wanted to bring home this white mother of pearl button pillow....don't you think it would look fab in my newly redecorated master bedroom?

But, I had to rein myself in, so I settled on purchasing these two sweet little tin birds.

They now fly over my bedside table.

But never fear Alice Lane...I shall be back...oh yes, I shall be back.

For some more Alice Lane inspiration, hop over and visit their blog.

Have a great day~
