The Home Office...a little update~

(please forgive the grainy photos...basement room+cloudy day=really low light)

I have been slowly working on my home office. It is getting there a little bit at a time, piece by piece. This weekend, I finally finished some throw pillows for the big overstuffed chair that used to be in our living room....but now graces the "gallery" wall in the office.

I also hung some of our photos using the Dignitet display system from IKEA.

I had originally planned to use white wooden frames for the wall....but as you can see from the photo, there are two really ugly, really black air vents on the wall...and I thought that using frames would only serve to draw more attention to the vents. The Dignitet system, however, puts all the photos at the same level and although the vents are still obvious, they aren't part of the display. (Does anyone have a brilliant idea on how to camouflage those darn things without blocking airflow - and we can't paint them 'cause this is a rental house?)

I printed the photos on printable canvas from Office Depot, so they hang nice and straight without curling the way paper can. And the great thing is that the photos can be swapped easily without having to undo frames!

The office is really coming together...now to accessorize! I'll share the process with you as I go!

The hubby's parents arrive from Massachusetts today and will be staying at our house for the next few days...so excited to have them!

Have a great day~

You can paint them to match your walls using spray paint. They are totally paintable :)

or you can just paint them with the wall color that you used on the wall. that is what i do.

thanks for the tip about printable canvas.

I didn't know about the printable canvas either, I had only seen it where places like snapfish did it online. I did a photo of my kids like that last year for christmas gifts and it was a really big hit, but expensive. It would be nice to be able to DIY it!

I feel like my office is where all the stuff I don't have a place for but don't have the heart to get rid of goes! I have this great stainless steel desk from IKEA, but guess what, wireless mouses do not work on stainless steel and it also interferes with the wireless internet signal! Ugggh! So now my computer is on a console table that my legs do not fit under! I will be working on that this week I think, thanks for the push!

Other than painting those vents, I have no idea how to disguise them and keep them functional other than building a shelf (like a box with the back open) around them. The air will move through it but the vent is black and will fade into the back of the shelf box and be less noticeable. What to put on the shelf that won't block air flow either is the question. I'm not a nick knack paddy wacker (in the collectible figurines sense) so those are out of the question for me...maybe a silver bowl with a candle...something along those lines. That's all I got for ya, there.

Regardless, I love what you did with the Dignitet System and your brilliant thought process behind that. It looks lovely and I like the printed canvas. On Friday, I'll be sharing a similar vintage-y concept with wire and crystals.

I love those pillows, too. Cute prints!

Hugs,
Jami

I love following your blog but for some reason it only gives a small snipet in Google reader. I know I miss some of your great posts because of it. I just thought you'd want to know.

Ooooh. I really like the way you displayed the photos. Didn't know about the printable canvas either. Such great tips. And those pillows are darling.

Love that digitet system! I always want o change out pictures and it's so time consuming in frames.

Maybe if you talked to your landlord & offered to paint the vents the color of the walls and pay for the supplies they would let you do it...

Are the vents a standard size? If so, a quick trip to the hardware store can score you a nicer looking vent (white, wood, etc.). A small investment for a piece of "wall art" that you look at every day.

Since painting the vents isn't an option - and since swapping them out might also not be an option given that it's a rental unit - how about hanging some sort of an open weave basket over them? Might help disguise them a bit.

I just want to say that you have one of my favorite blogs :)My tip for covering the vent: Contact paper or some sort of larger vinyl wall cling (decor image of some sort) that you can incorporate the slits of the grille, because after you cover and slice openings it will be a bit more noticeable.

I love how your home office is coming along. How about painting the vents to match your wall color so they blend in?
Have a great visit with your in-laws!

my comment is the same as KREW's. If the vents are standard size, you could buy another set and paint to match the walls. if they are the same size as floor vents, home depot sells them for $5.77 i believe. hope john continues to heal and that your dad comes through his next surgery with better results. they are in my prayers. cindy

I like what you have done with your home office so far! LOVE the pictures hung up like you did! :) About the vents...I have stared at them for a while, and am still coming up blank here! I wish I could think of something brilliant for you!

I hope you are doing all right, and that your husband is healing well, as well as your dad. Still praying for you all...

Sorry didn't realize it was a rental, but you could ask if they'll let you paint the vents they might not care. Or buy a set, paint them and put them up til' you move and then swap them back. :) Just thinkin.
