A Little Living Room Facelift~

This is the story of how a series of unfortunate delivery events ended up benefitting both my living room and my pocket book.

Clear back in April I blogged about the sweet chair below, with which I was completely and totally smitten. Well, I ordered said chair...two of them actually.

And I waited, and waited, and waited. And they didn't come. So I ended up cancelling my order.

Sigh.

And so I thought, and thunked, and thinked about what to do because this is how my living room looked at the time. YIKES. The mismatched chairs had. to. go.

And the more I thought about my dilemma, the more my mind returned to my pretty TJMaxx beauties that sat on either side of my rehabbed console.

And I finally decided to bite the bullet, and see how they would look in place of my mismatched chairs.

And I loved it!! Loved. it. Because I am actually a neutral girl at heart, and my desire to infuse color by adding the yellow chairs, may have been a little bold for me. They probably wouldn't have lasted anyway, even though they are adorable, because I'm afraid they were just too bright for the space.

So my neutral beauties shall remain. But, they are much smaller in scale than the two chairs that were previously there...and although I wanted a coffee table before, the living room actually SCREAMS for a coffee table now. So I am on a red-alert look out for a pretty square table to rehab....or perhaps to construct. And...I've decided to make two smallish ottomans that will fit under the console and provide additional seating to replace the two lost chairs.

And while I've got you all emotionally invested in my living room (ha ha), I wanted to ask your opinion...I'm thinking about making a couple of chocolate-colored throw pillows for the two chairs that will blend with the pillows currently on the sofa [pictured above]. To see what it will look like I borrowed some from the boys' bedroom. What do you all think? Do you like them with brown pillows? (the ones I make would be slightly smaller in scale.) Because I value your opinions, my dear readers, I'm begging asking you to please weigh-in with your opinion in the comments.

And so, in the end, the delivery mishap really was a good thing after all. There's always a silver lining, isn't there?

And I'm sure you're dying to know what I did with the mismatched chairs...well, the overstuffed tan chair is now in the downstairs family room, and the leather chair (the hubby's favorite) found its rightful place as part of a reading nook in the little boys' room. ...And they all lived happily ever after. (Until I decide to tweak things again anyway.)

Awesome artwork above the chair...from Modern Bird Studios.

Have a great day~

I like the chairs there - I think they look pretty in front of your fireplace - and I like the brown pillows on them. But I think you're right - a little smaller versions would be good.

I know you love neutrals but I have to say rectangle moss green pillows would look fabulous there and would pick up the green in your topiaries. But what do I know? Gorgeous chairs. You can't go wrong.

That little bit of added symmetry is just right. Those chairs would look good anywhere!

I know you love your neutrals, but a splash of color with the pillows would be a great punch to the room and almost no commitment.

I am clapping my hands it looks gorgeous! and you saved a bundle doing it this way

When you make the smaller pillows how about neutral one side and a zing of color on the other,so you can flip them depending on your mood or time of year?

Love them. I think Kristina came up with the perfect idea.

I love the chairs there, but you do need some color on the SMALLER pillows so the room doesn't look boring. Also, there's something strange about the room, but once I starred a little longer at the room, I realized it's the middle think on your fireplace mantel that's throwing it off. Not sure what it is, but I think without it and having the mirror itself with your decor on the sides would look better! You have a lovely home!

Sorry for my spelling...I meant the middle THING above your fireplace. Hope that makes sense! :)

It is looking good. I think green pillows would look fantastic on the chairs, (although I really love brown alot), but some color would really look great, or maybe even yellow for the pillows like the original chairs you ordered. Can't wait to see what you do : )

Love those chairs there. I do think those pillows are a little large & cover up too much of the chair prettiness but a smaller rectanglular pillow made of some beautiful fabric would be nice.
Have fun.

i like the idea Kristina had....one side chocolate brown and the other side a punchy color. change them with your mood!

they lived happily ever after...you are too funny!
sadness on those yellow chairs. i loved them too

i have a love hate relationship with pillows
i love them
i love them big & fluffy
& i love them everywhere

however i tend to over pillow & find people having to move them to sit down
so
i think i'd pass on the pillows for those chairs
i think, even if smaller scale that they would distract from the pretty shape & end up being moved
sorry...i hope you don't mind all these opinions! brave woman!

Love the idea of the brown pillows on those chairs- just use a lumbar size 12 x 18 or something similar in size. That way you can see the beautiful tufting on the chairs!

Love the chairs. Maybe the pillows are your chance to infuse color...yellow like the original chairs.

I think you made a very good decision to move the chairs away from the console. The living room looks so warm and cozy!

I actually like the chairs with no pillows. The chairs are so great by themselves, but that's my opinion.

Great job!

Your chair are super cute their, I think I would go with maybe a smaller brown pillow in one and chair and a brown throw over the other one just to give it a little more of a different look. Oh and I LOVE your lamps that are underneath the 4 pictures!

I like pillows on the chairs. They would definitely need to be smaller. I think some little rectangular back pillows or a little roll pillow would look great. Too bad you don't live closer to me, 'cause I just saw a great square coffee table on our local CL for $25 this morning. :(

I am such a neutral gal at heart too! I love the brown pillows on the chairs - they are a tiny bit formal looking and the pillows tone that down - they look very inviting!

I like the pillow idea, but not so much the brown. You should do some glam pillows like I just did. Check out my sweater vest pillow at http://froufrugal.blogspot.com.

I say go with color in your pillows... it'll give you the pop without commiting a small fortune in a chair.... something with a creamy/nuetral background with a color pattern everywhere else.... i read what Paige wrote and also agree.... I have pillows every where and watch when other people besides family are here don't know what to do when they sit down... i always tell them "go ahead toss it on the floor" :) so i agree with Paige maybe you don't need pillows.... or do.... oh the dilemna!!! it's a fun one though

Now that's a story with one sweet happy ending. I love the twwhite chairs and I think they look great. I also love the brown pillow idea. I just love when things work out for the better in the end dont you? Susie~

The 2 smaller chairs look great in the space! And I'm sure they will get more use in the living room. I definitely like the look of some dark brown cushions to add to the chairs. Sounds like everything worked out just as it should have!

I love your chairs just the way they are! :) And I ADORE the cute lamp shades on the table behind the couch!! Did you make those or buy them? :)

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Ha, I love your "musical chairs"...and they look great here! Pillows will add a lot, brown is good but so would a sage green or a muted color pulled from the rug. Good luck deciding! :)

a beautiful green would look great...

I love the chairs in their new home!!! Perfecto...

I would like to see some pillows similar to the ones on the couch. Definately brond but maybe with a hint of an ivory demask design in them.

Well done as always!

Tweaking your decor is so fun isn't it?! Its addicting. Anyway, you are right, it does need a coffee table to even out the scale of the room. I like the idea of pillows. I would say rectangle pillows and though neutral is nice this would be a great place to infuse some of that color you were originally going for. Maybe recover some pillows in fabric similar to the yellow upholstery of the Target chairs. Or maybe a moss/spring green. I would definitely find fabric/pillows with color and a pattern, just to add some interest. Cant wait to see what you do! :)

I love the chairs. I also agree with smaller pillows but I would make the pillows a color. Maybe the green that is above the fireplace, the blue that is on your book shelves or red/orange from the rug.

Oh man...I am having my own chair dilemma in my family room! I wish I had a couple of fabulous chairs sitting somewhere else just waiting to make an appearance...you're a lucky gal!

I have to say that I'm on the 'color' side of the pillow debate. And, my un-requested other two cents...have you thought about painting the brass on the fireplace black? I think it would be stunning! Love your blog, and love what you do. I can't wait to see the finished look for the chairs!

Too bad about the yellow chairs I actually love the bright color, but I think these look fab in front of the fireplace!
I think long rectangular pillows would look great. Just make sure you don't cover up the detail on the chairs, they are too pretty!

I love your TJMaxx chairs! They look lovely flanking your fireplace! I wish my TJMaxx had furniture.

Julia @ Hooked on Houses said...

I love those yellow chairs, but those neutral ones look FABulous in front of the fireplace. It really did turn out for the best. I like the brown pillows, but I think smaller ones would show off the chairs better. Your home is beautiful! :)

Jami said...

The chairs definitely look more interesting with pillows, so no matter what type you decide on, I vote for pillows there! Cool idea to have a color on one side you can flip, though...

Here is where you could use a change of color to compliment the jazzy ones on your sofa. Why not pull in a mossy green that would reflect your pretty topiaries. You have a nice variety of neutrals/textures so now add that pop, maybe even that golden yellow in the mishappened chairs.

freckled laundry said...

Those chairs look p.e.r.f.e.c.t. there! As for the pillows, I like the brown (in a smaller scale), but I think that a pale green (or any green) would look fabulous and pick up the green in your topiaries. Maybe a brown with green print? Or green on one side and brown on the other and you can just flippem' for versatility. Is there green in that rug? Either way, I'm sure you'll do a fantastic job...you always do!

I wanted you to know, I came across your blog the other day and you have inspired me. I am a neutral girl at heart too but I decided I want to add a little color to my living room... I've been looking for a while and finally decided to order this super cute green chair from Overstock. I think you should go for the yellow pillows. You inspired me... why not throw the pillows in with a little color. It will just give it that extra pop.
