I have blogged before about our lack of a headboard. It wasn't always like that...
I had a headboard once.
Before my blogging days.
I loved that headboard.
The hubby made it for me for Christmas one year.
From this pattern by Martha Stewart.

It was beautiful...
And substantial...
And elegant in black...
But alas, in one of our 2000-or-so moves (okay, I am exaggerating just a bit) it was broken...
beyond repair...
and we have not had a headboard since.
In our new master bedroom the bed sits beneath a window.
So I guess it's okay that my substantial, tall, elegant Martha-inspired headboard is gone, because I need something lower in profile anyway.
Perhaps something like this...

That means that my goal in the next couple of months is to find the perfect architectural salvage piece.
Wish me luck~

You really do have a great blog here. I have a blog myself which brings inspiration and guidance to people all around the world. Life is hard enough, and I hope my site can contribute anything positive to someone's day.
I'd like to exchange links with you to help spread some traffic around between each other. Please let me know if this is possible. Until then, keep up the good work.

Just a suggestion - I coveted this gorgeous headboard from Pottery Barn I could never afford ($1,000 leather padded one), but eventually we made one ourselves. It was surprisingly easy to make a wood frame, cover it with foam, the most expensive part. Then I chose a dark brown suede for the cover. Not exactly the headboard of my dreams, but the padded comfort, especially when you want to sit up in bed, flipping through magazines or sick as a dog, it is really a nice feature.
Since then I changed from wanting dark furniture to white so we just made a slip cover kind of deal with white vinyl that looks great against pale pale blue paint. Greatest thing is - easy to clean, get tired of it just choose new fabric to cover it again and also helps in winter if you are so close to a window for extra insulation. Just a thought. But I love the architectural piece, too. Just be careful not to bang your head on it getting out of bed. LOL
My cats love the headboard as it is like a shelf and they sometimes sleep on top of it. :)

ooohhh...love that architectural piece & the whole feel of that room!
I cannot wait to see what you find!
I feel your pain. I have moved so much that I have never felt I could get one. [I guess at least you have loved and lost :-)] I adore the architectural headboards and that is they way I'm heading. *no pun intended* I finally have moved into a home I feel I will be in for a long time. At least I hope so. It is home in my heart and homey in every sense. I'll be following your quest with great interest.
As a side note. I live a few hours away from New Orleans...I'm thinking about a weekend shopping trip to some of their architectural salvage shops. Should prove to be fun and interesting!
Fingers crossed... you'll find it. Or you will come up with something entirely beautiful. I have no doubts whatsoever.
Good Luck!
Now that you are out west here in the beehive state, it will be interesting for me to find out where you go looking for salvage pieces. While I love living on the Wasatch Front for lots of reasons, I'm a bit biased when it comes to our total lack of cool places to shop for such artifacts. I'll be interested to find out if you can break my prejudice.
Having a big tall headboard attached to your bed is one thing, but I don't think I could have that vintage worn shelf over my bed -- I don't like things hanging over my head while I sleep. Especially heavy things.
oh my...that is divine! please let me know if you find a good architectural salvage yard...i have yet to find one in utah...sigh...can't wait to see what you find!
My spareroom doesn't have a headbord either but I made one over the weekend using of discarded furniture pieces.
Happy Hunting :)
I'm sorry if you're like yeah DUH! I know that blog. . .but Knock Off Wood is amazing with all her directions to make furniture from our favorite stores. She has some beautiful bed plans from PB.
Oh, keep us posted where you find this treasure! Good luck! Janell
Love the unique headboard idea! Although I'd be nervous to have large vases sitting just a few feet above me while I was sleeping :p
I love using architectural salvage. when we were looking for a headboard my husband wanted to find an old iron gate or fence.
If you find something, please let me know how you distress it? I have been looking for a tin molded shelf like that, but they are so expensive premade. I would be so interested to see what you do with what you find! Thanks - love your blog
Oh, I can't wait to see what you find! I know it will be beautiful!
When we moved into our house we did not have a headboard either, I was planning on getting on when we moved in, but things cropped up and the purchase of a headboard had to wait. Then one day I was moving the remains of the crib out to the curb and I thought why not- now we have a headboard- the two crib ends- It is a solution for now that I am very happy with and it was free!
Good luck on finding your new headboard.
When and if you do hit the jackpot,...send some pieces my way!!??:) Pretty please?
I can't wait to see what you find! That bedroom pic is really pretty...
Happy hunting. I love the idea of an old salvaged piece. I'd have one myself, but it's all windows behind my bed.
I really need one too. I'll be following for ideas:) I love the mantle.
I'm in need of a headboard too...can't wait to see what you come up with....perhaps I can get some ideas =)
Your site is lovely as always.
Happy Day
