An Unfortunate Situation~

Hello my dear readers!

I interrupt this vacation to bring you news of an unfortunate nature! I debated if I even wanted to post about this, but then I thought it was a good idea to share it with all of my friends in blogland! A dear fellow blogger emailed me to tell me that another "blog" has been using my posts. Word for word, picture for picture. I am not even going to link to the offending blog, because I certainly don't want to drive traffic their way, but I wanted to let you all know what is going on just in case any of you happen upon the "blog" that is doing this.

I am working to correct whatever it is that is going on, but in the meantime, I want to warn my fellow bloggers to make sure that you follow up on blogs that are linking to you, and where your traffic is coming from. And if you happen upon a post that looks suspiciously familiar, please do as my dear bloggy friend did, and let someone know. We need to watch out for one another! We pour our hearts into our blogs, and for heavens sake, we need to give credit where credit is due.

I love my little corner of the blogosphere! I love the fact that there are so many supportive, caring and nurturing people who make it a wonderful place to be. Let's not let those who are less than ethical ruin it for the rest of us!

One more post from the archives is headed your way, and then I should be back in blogland!! Can't wait to catch up on all the blogging goodness that I've missed.

I'm signing this post and linking to my blog on purpose to see what happens if the other "blog" reposts this post...I guess we'll see. sigh.

xoxo
Wendy @ The Shabby Nest

Edited to add: Thanks for some great info and great support! There are those who would like the link so they can leave comments on the offending blog...Just wanted you all to know that comments don't seem to be working on the blog. (I've tried and my bloggy friend has tried...) And for those of you who mentioned blogs who steal posts from feeds...I think that may be what is going on, and I am currently looking into it! Thanks again! I know you all rock!!!

oh please do give the link. I'd love to chime in and let said blogger know my opinion.

Don't worry who asks if the real Wendy & Shabby Nest could please Stand Up? Your followers already know who YOU are!

I would also love to know the link so I can give them a piece of my mind. If we all go and leave comments on that blog letting them know how we feel, then we can expose them to the readers who have no idea. I always try to put a watermark on my photos so they are harder to steal. Hope you are having fun on your vacation!

So sorry to hear that Wendy. Justice be done!

OMG! What nerve!! Never been able to undesrtand why someone would be who they aren't ....especially on the web when noone really knows you anyway. I mean, if you can't be yourself anonymously, then how are you gonna be you in the real world?

That is so annoying! Makes me so mad for you! I want to give that blogger a piece of my mind as well. Sigh, it's sad what some people will do for attention. Hope you are enjoying your vacation, I'm loving the archive posts, I hadn't seen any of them before!

I feel for you! The same thing happened to me a few months ago. Someone was copying my photos and text. I wrote to her twice and she didn't answer so I contacted her webhost and they directed me on what had to be done. They gave her 24 hrs to remove the posts or they would take down her site. It works and we are protected - it's good to know!

Oh... That is so bad!
I'm glad I'm not popukar for that reason...
But those stuff happens all the time!
I wonder how someone can steal something from a blog 900+ peoples follows and *think* no one will realise... c'mon?

Hope your vacation is going well!

I don't know if you're familiar with the blog Scribbit, but she did a post in September about protecting your blog and your copyright. It's got some before and after tips: some for protecting, and some for if you do get plagiarized. Check it out here.

Several blogs I read only post short intros in their feeds (that go into Google Reader and other readers), because there are some plagiarizers that run their blog directly out of what they can find in the Readers. That might be a start for you.

This has happened frequently on a few of the "deal" type bloggers...for instance, Money Saving Mom (top 500 of all blogs)had a bunch of people steal every single thing. She emailed them directly with some strong "legal" language and the blog shut down promptly.

i hope, once confronted, they take their blog down promptly.

Wow. I'm so sorry to hear this!! Hopefully you can get it sorted out soon. :<

I just stumbled across your blog tonight and I love it!

Well, that stinks that someone has copied your posts. Hope it gets resolved rather quickly. Thank goodness for your blogger friend that alerted you.

Enjoy the rest of your vacation and I will enjoy poking around your blog.

I'm so sorry for that happening to you! I hope it all gets sorted out for you.

I don't even understand someone wanting to do that! Such deceit! Hope things get straightened out soon. Jackie

Almost everything you just said went 'over my head' except I caught the words "steal" and "copy." What a shame. Just another 'trial' to persevere through - Count it all joy! (I know that is not easy - and I can't always take that advice, myself). Best wishes.

Amanda @ Serenity Now said...

Oh no!!!!! I don't think anyone would want to steal my content, but I do wonder about the photos of my girls and house.

Can you offer some tips on how to figure out the whole traffic thing?

I hope you get this sorted out soon!! It must suck to be the blogger who has to copy someone else's work.

Mary Ellen (megardengal) said...

I have seen pictures being copied but had not heard of whole blog entries- What in the world is the reasoning-- beyond me. Hope you are able to get it all worked out without alot of hassle!

Geez my little ol blog is so cheezy I don't think I would have a problem with this ever!!!

Sure do enjoy all your inspiration you bring!

So sorry that you are having to deal with this. I hope you get everything figured out soon. I'll have to keep my eyes open for this type of thing. We bloggers need to stick together!

I'm so sorry to hear of your problems. I can't believe someone would stoop so low and I don't see the point of it. I hope you get it resolved as quickly and painlessly as possible. I've only been reading blogs for about the last month, but yours was one of the first I added to my favorites. You're an inspiration. Keep up the good work and have a relaxing time for the remainder of your vacation.

Nicole @ BugaBoos said...

So sorry Wendy, that would be so frustrating! We definitely need to stick together! Try and enjoy the rest of your vacation!

So sorry you're having this problem. Some people!
Let us know if you find out how to prevent it from happening & safe trip home.

Sorry to hear about your blog being stolen. I cannot understand why someone would take another person's blog and use it instead of using their own unique way to blog. Must be a strange person whoever this is. Hope this is resolved for you and the person who is stealing your blog has a conscience that kicks in.

Tiffany said...

That is so unfortunate. I can't believe someone would do that. Takes the whole fun out of having a blog. Imitation is the highest form of flattery though, right? Your blog is that awesome that someone would want to copy the whole thing. I saw one of my pictures on another blog with no credit given and was bothered by that. I can't imagine having the whole thing "stolen". I hope that you are able to take care of the situation and put it to an end.

What a terrible thing to do! I'm sorry you're having to deal with this, esp. while you're on vacation. I hope it's cleared up soon. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Astrid said...

I just can't believe that people would do that! I assume that we all operate with good old fashioned moral values but I guess I'm wrong. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'd be curious to see the link. I hope that person promptly shuts down her blog.

Lisa said...

That's terrible!!!

http://myfreecopyright.com/

Register your blog here, for free, and each post you write will have a copyright number assigned to it. One of the photography blogs I follow introduced me to it.

It's one thing to say "I was inspired by Shabby Nest" and provide a link back to the post but it's completely different to steal.

I'm so sorry this happened to you!

Crafty Niche said...

I'm sorry that happened! I hope you can get it all worked out.

Sorry to hear about that. How strange. Is it an automatically generated, robot-type thief, or an actual person!?

Nice and Easy Antiques said...

Hope you can fix this ASAP.

This means your posts are REALLY good for someone to "steal" them!

XOXO

Sarah said...

It is a real shame that some people feel the need to copy instead of being original. I guess while it gets straightened out take the compliment that they think you are awesome and want to be just like you!

Joan@anythinggoeshere said...

I have never heard of such a thing. I guess you will keep us posted an what happens from here! Yikes!

Bella Crafts said...

I've read that this type of blog stealing is a bit more rampant than we think! Good thing there is a solution! And having RSS is probably more of a hinderance than good because people read the RSS rather than visiting your site. Now I'm a relatively new blogger, but I for one prefer to have a "visitor" rather than the person who simply reads RSS reader.

So sorry you are having to deal with this.... People never seem to amaze me.. Leslie

Hi Wendy,
I just checked "THAT BLOG" and it actually posted this post that you wrote about it. I'm wondering if it is set to automatically post from our blogs. I wish I could figure out who the other blogs belong to that are also being "hi-jacked".
This is driving me crazy!
I think that I might do a post similar to yours on my blog too.

That's awful! First my homicide detective neighbour had me freaked out about considering posting pics of my family on my blog and now all this confusing theft stuff. I just don't know what to do anymore.

I hate that this has happened to you! I just don't understand how people can do such things!
You've put so much hard work into your blog...
I guess it is flattering...in a very disturbing kind of way! Someone must wish they were Wendy @ Shabby Nest! You are wonderful...hope this is resolved soon!

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I am still so new at this and learning all the ropes. How do we check people linking to us? Help us know what to do and what we need to be checking up on daily.

Thanks,

Well, that's rotten. I teach college English and we discuss a great deal about how what's out there on the web isn't free for the taking without citation. So . . . I may use this story in future classes as yet another example of how utterly wrong it is to take others' work without citing it. It is good to have a "real life," not just academic, example to work with.
I hope you get this straightened out.
