One Man's Trash~

On Saturday, the Hubby and I dropped off Mr. One at a birthday party, and headed out with the other 3 kiddos to get some errands done, when what should I spy, but a bunch of furniture with a "free" sign next to it. I scared the Hubby as I yelled at him to stop the car, but he did, and I climbed out and ran over to the cutest petite upholstered chair. (I could sense him rolling his eyes behind me!)

I assumed that since the furniture was free there would be something grossly wrong with it. But upon close inspection...there was no smell, there was no major damage. The cushion needs some restuffing, and the fabric is an old slubby cream silk that will definitely need to be reupholstered at some point. But aside from that, it was WONDERFUL.

I asked the Hubby to help me load it in the car. He complained, and muttered and if the kiddos hadn't been there, he may have even cussed (hee hee). But, in the end, he always humors me, so load it in we did.

We got it home, I sprayed it with a generous amount of Lysol (that's because of the germophobe in me), wiped off some of the dirt with good old diaper wipes, (see this post where I extol the virtues of diaper wipes in cleaning fabrics) and hauled it up to the boys' room. I have been wanting a chair for their room to create a little reading nook and I knew this little gem would be perfect.

It looks fabulous. Even the Hubby admits that it looks good! It will look even more fabulous when reupholstered...I'm thinking a grainsack-look with a single blue stripe down the center ...anyone have any ideas where I could find such fabric? But for now, it will do nicely, and little Mr. Three already loves it! It just proves that One Man's Trash is Another Man's (or Woman's) Treasure!

Thought I'd throw in a couple of other pics of the boys' reading space to balance out this wordy post!

Here's a great globe I found at Barnes & Noble. I just love the feeling of sophistication that a globe can add to a room.

And I love this quirky little baseball lamp. It had a rather tacky shade originally, so I replaced it with this one that I recovered in denim to match the denim accents in their room.
Just a reminder about next week's TOILE TUESDAY linky party at Pretty Organized Palace...be working on those toile posts. I'm hoping to get an exciting new project finished in time...the operative word being "hoping". See you all there!

Have a great Monday~

I love the chair! It's exactly the kind of chair I need for my living room. Lucky you finding it for free.

Well now, that's not fair. Why aren't there awesome free chairs in my neighborhood? :)

That is awesome! I am always on the lookout for things like that. I once got a darling vintage nightstand for free and have it in my younger daughter's room. I love that feeling! Congrats.

Great find! I'm still kicking myself for not grabbing an amazing wicker chest I saw kicked to the curb in an upscale neighborhood. I think I was worried what the ritzy people would think of me hauling the thing into the back of my mountain girl Subaru...yep, still kicking myself.

Oh, thanks for the lysol and babywipe tip too :).

I can't believe someone would throw out that great chair! So glad you rescued it and gave it a new home!

Cool chair! There is a fabric called osnaberg, I think. Or something close to that. It has kind of a linen/feed sack look to it. It is over with the tickings and other utility fabrics at my JoAnn's. It's wonderfully inexpensive and might work well for your project. I don't know how to achieve the blue stripe part, but you could experiment with fabric paint or something like that, perhaps.

I desperately need a couple of chairs to put in our family room so I can move the poor little lonely chair in there to our bedroom. I'm trying to decide between white canvas and the osnaberg for our slipcovers.

How funny! I scored a FREE chair from someone's front yard yesterday too! Mine's not as beautiful as yours, it's for outside, but I'm excited to make it over!

We live in a new home and they are building so many new homes around us. We have found many things in the dumpsters as we've gone on walks. The chair is awesome - and it's not that difficult to reupholster them. I've done several. I'd check ebay or even etsy for the fabric your looking for!

Thank goodness for those hubbies that humor us! I am always coming home saturday with an address of a garage sale where hubby has to go pick something up. I get that look too - the shake of the head, the roll of the eyes. "Trust me," I tell him. I don't know if he does, but he is a good soul who knows what makes his woman happy, so he goes. And my new treasure usually works out fabulously and he has to admit I did good.

I see your vision with that chair, sista! Awsome!

Wow! That is perfect there! What a great find. I love how you redid the lampshade to coordinate the room too.

If you find a fabric in the background color/texture you want then you could spray paint the stripe! Hubs spray painted red stripes on some white shirts for our Where's Waldo Halloween costumes one year (people didn't know the stripes were painted on till we told them!) and Eddie Ross posted about a chair with spray painted stripes: http://www.eddieross.com/eddie_ross/2009/03/jordans-chair.html

Can't wait to see your finished chair!

That chair is gorgeous! I've even been looking for one similar to that. I wouldn't even redo it. I swear the only piles I ever see in front of peoples house here are tree limbs (and I often think to stop for those - we often heat by wood burning stove)just not very exciting.

Girl, you got way lucky! Hey, I need the paint color of your boy's room. Love it!

Painting kitchen cabinets this week (spring break) with all the kiddos home. Why? The only time I have babysitters for the young'ns. Hopefully all will go smoothly.

Thanks for the plug... you're wonderful!

Wendy,

I love your chair. I don't know where you might find the sacks for that idea but I think blue and white striped ticking would be perfect for the boys room. It isn't expensive and would wear really well.

You are soooo lucky. My husband would have driven on by.
