The Desk

You might remember this little desk.

I wasn't sure just how to tackle a redo on this little roll-top desk that our neighbor so graciously gave us for the Princess. You all suggested I spray paint it. So I did. And it turned out very well. I chose Krylon's Fusion spraypaint in Almond. I could have perhaps gone with a little more of an Ivory. But I think I like how it turned out...sooo I'm going to live with if for a while.

The hardware was black, and in a moment of decorating genious (or perhaps more like insanity) I decided that it would be cute to decoupage the handles. I used my trusty Mod Podge and some scrapbook paper that I had used elsewhere in her room. Pretty cute...and they gave the little desk some great personality! I had to paint the screws with a little acrylic paint because they were still black and they stood out like a sore thumb...now, you barely notice them.

I found the finished product a great home right here. Now, I'm off to find a chair...oh the possibilities...

And a little P.S. on the ragamuffin backpack project; I've had some people asking how I did it. It couldn't have been simpler. I just tore some strips of fabric roughly 8" long and 1" or so wide. Then I just half-knotted them right onto the handle of the backpack. I also tied a few on the pocket (which happened to have a little bit of a strap there as well.) VOILA! Cute and personalized!

Great job! So cute and girly!

I am addicted to mod podge at the moment, so I too keep thinking of ways I can spruce things up with it and some paper or fabric!

I love the stool too. Nice job!!

Very very cute! Love the knobs!

How did the paint work with the roll up part? Did you have to do anything extra?

Adorable! I love that you used scrapbook paper on the handles. Did you cover the lampshade too?

To answer a couple of questions...the desk didn't take long to do at all...maybe 20 minutes to spraypaint...the pulls took longer than the desk ;) And since I chose that fusion spraypaint, I didn't even need to sand (it was great!) I didn't need to do anything special for the roll top part - it was much easier that I expected. And yes, I did cover the lampshade to match the pillows and little stepstool in the room. I just got one of those pre-glued lampshades at Joann's...it comes with a pattern to cut the fabric, stuck it on, the hot glued the edges. Easy-peasy!

That is the cutest desk ever, and the hardware you found for it is perfect. Nice job with the color combination. I never would have thought of papering the knobs. That may be the solution for my daughters' dresser. Thanks for the idea.

What was wrong with the bare wood?

changing the black pulls to brass would have been nice.

I got a solid wood black walnut desk for $1.00 that was spray painted. it has taken hours and hours to get the paint off so I can see the beautiful wood grain below.
In 10 year when the paint is chipping an flaking you will strip it back to wood.
My mother did that first she painted stuff then after 10 0r 15 years she striped back to the bare wood and just put a wax finish on the furniture.
