Back to school week continues...

Next up, the desk.

My neighbor came over a week or so ago, and asked if we might be interested in a little roll-top desk. She said her daughter had outgrown it and she thought the Princess might like it for her room. It is so cute. I love the bin pulls. Trouble is, I'm not much of an oak person. I've made over my fair share of furniture in my time, but I'm a little bit worried about how to tackle this one. The furniture in the Princess' room is mostly cream in color, and so I thought painting it might be nice, but I'm especially worried about painting the roll-top. Then I thought of all my new friends in Blogland and I decided to ask you all. What do you think my dear readers? How should I tackle this?

Spray paint! It gets inside all the nooks and crannies! And then you can do a top coat of paint. You may need to rough up the oak finish first. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I second the spray paint idea! It's so easy to use and doesn't get all gloppy in the crevices. Also, if you want to do a more shabby finish, you could sand it down some on the areas where it needs to move to roll down. Definitely share what you end up doing- I love making over furniture pieces!

LOVE that little desk...it is too cute. I also say spray paint and just don't open it for a good, long time till the paint is really, really dry. I think it would do just fine.

What a wonderful little desk! Definitely spray paint! But then I spray paint anything that doesn't run away from me. ;-)

I think a soft white finish would look wonderful and would work even as your daughter gets older.

It sounds like you need spray paint. You can freshen it up with some new hardware, too, and it would be the cutest little desk fit for a princess!

it's so gorgeous - don't paint it!!! besides, you might have trouble rolling the top if it's painted:)

I like the idea of spray painting and distressing, then maybe some lighter-colored hardware. :) Good luck!

Don't paint it! Atleast don't paint the entire thing. I don't know if I can describe this well but here goes...

1. Looking at the side of the desk. I would paint in the inlaid shape border with a sage and ivory check border.

2. On the center section of that shape I would decopage some of the sage and ivory toile that you used in the room.

3. For the inside of the desk. I would line the interior walls with toile. Up until the groove for the rolltop. I would make a blotter using the same colors and off the front of the blotter I would have a little pleated skirt hanging over the front edge -- so that when the rolltop is closed a bit of the pattern shows.

4. On the legs of the desk (and possibly the skirt of the desk) I would do wide ivory and sage stripes.

Is this over the top or what?

Rent a paint sprayer from Home Depot, use melamine paint (tinted any colour you like) but make sure you wash the entire desk with TSP first and give it a light sanding.

I hate oak. I painted a whole kitchen this way. The paint needs a good long while to dry, it might peel if you handle it too soon.

Otherwise, spray paint. It just might not stick that well over the long run.

Hello! I definitely say paint it. Just make sure you put some effort into the prep work and let it dry for a looong time. I think an off white color would be pretty with some crystal hardware. Why don't MY neighbors just give me some furniture??! P.S. Loving your blog!

i second the spray painting! i don't know your daughter's bedroom colors, but i think it would just be so, so sweet in a color. that way it could be a point of focus. i can see it in a soft pink or robin's egg blue!

Hi! I'm new to your blog and love all your great ideas. My husband spray painted a rolltop desk for our daughter and the paint has held up really well. The roll top part was not in great shape and so he took it off to paint it and she liked it better without. We replaced the knobs with cream iron bird knobs. So cute! Have fun.
